Project scope and objective

The Project includes the rehabilitation, administration, operation, maintenance and complementary works of the CA-9 South “A” Escuintla – Puerto Quetzal highway (between Km 60+900 to 102+100). The existing 41.20 km long road is a dual carriageway route with two lanes in each direction. The main objective of the project is to raise the route to highway level, improving its geometric conditions and operational infrastructure, which meets high service standards that meet current traffic capacity requirements and expected demand, improving service levels, safety and comfort, promoting the development of the region.

The Escuintla – Puerto Quetzal Highway project corresponds to the first initiative of the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV) under the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) model of Guatemala.

The ESDD will confirm the project E&S categorization and assess the project with respect to the client requirements in IDB Invest Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy. The results of the ESDD, including any identified gaps are described in the Environmental and Social Review Summary (ESRS) provided below. For projects approved as of 2016, any gaps with respect to IDB Invest's Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy at the time of the ESDD are addressed in the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) presented below, to comply with the date mentioned above.
