IDB Invest Supports Clínicas Yuna to Enhance Innovative Health Services in Brazil

IDB Invest partnered with Clinicas Yuna, an innovative health company in Brazil, to provide a BRL 35 million long-term financing to support the development and operation of its first post-acute care clinic (PAC) in the country.

The project will provide comprehensive support for rehabilitation, palliative and long-term care to patients who require high levels of personalized care and monitoring for recovery, after an acute episode. Clinicas Yuna began its operations with 25 beds in 2023, and this financing will contribute to increasing its capacity to up to 101 beds.

After undergoing a rigorous certification process that assessed the quality and features of the services to be offered, Clinicas Yuna earned certifications from leading health insurance providers in Brazil enabling its clients to be treated in the PAC.

Estimates from 2019 indicate that only 3.8% of private hospitalizations were discharged to post-acute services, including both PAC and home care services. The Brazilian post-acute market is dominated by home care (97.6% of total discharges), which has a less-effective clinical outcome compared to PAC. Although PAC offers an innovative solution that contributes to improving healthcare services, the current installed capacity reaches levels lower than 3,000 beds across the country.

A PAC offers significant advantages from a patient’s perspective. Those who receive treatment at a PAC following a major health episode see faster and better clinical outcomes compared to patients discharged to their homes without follow-up. For the healthcare system, PAC providers play a vital role in enhancing the overall quality of care, freeing up hospital resources and lowering health costs and readmissions.

Additionally, through IDB Invest’s participation the project will include the adoption of international best practices for environmental and social risk management, in accordance with IDB Invest Sustainability Policy. This entails the development and implementation of an environmental and social management system, implementation of energy efficiency and water use programs, and alignment with international best practices for fire and life safety guidelines.

The project is aligned with IDB Invest's commitment to improving infrastructure in the health and education sectors to scale impact in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The project is expected to contribute to the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9) and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).
