DUBAI – During the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), IDB Invest and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) announced they are co-investing a combined $23 million in equity in the micro-mobility platform Tembici, to support the expansion of bicycle-sharing services in Latin America. 

 

The project is expected to grow Tembici’s active users in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia from 300,000 in 2023 to more than 1 million by 2029. The number of trips is projected to more than triple, to close to 600 million by 2029. This will significantly reduce annual CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing 15,000 passenger cars off the road, by increasing the number of bike trips in cities as an alternative to cars. Tembici aims to help protect both the health of residents and the environment.

 

IDB Invest´s participation includes $5 million of its own capital and $3 million of blended finance from the Finland-LAC Blended Finance Climate Fund. DFC’s investment totaled $15 million.

 

Tembici operates one of the largest shared-bicycle networks in the world and offers a solution to municipalities and commuters facing a variety of mobility challenges, including high congestion, unaffordability of automobiles, and underinvestment in urban transportation infrastructure.

 

The company is also domestically producing its own electric bicycles (e-bikes), which allow for longer trips than conventional bicycles and demand less physical effort, making it a more attractive alternative for commuters currently using cars or motorbikes. The assembly plant, located in the Amazonian city of Manaus, Brazil, is expected to produce more than 50,000 new bicycles from 2023 to 2029, supporting local employment and driving sustainable economic development of the Amazon region.

 

As part of its development impact mandate, IDB Invest is providing advisory services in climate change and digital transformation to help scale Tembici’s innovative Digital Measuring Reporting and Verification (DMRV) system, currently under development. The DMRV system is a strategic component for the carbon certification process that will set a milestone for carbon credits transparency and integrity, using digital technologies to measure, report, and verify green gas emission reductions and automate carbon assets transactions.

 

DFC’s investment will help advance the G7’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI) by expanding sustainable public transportation and strengthening infrastructure in Brazil.

 

The transaction illustrates the commitment by IDB Invest and DFC to climate change mitigation through private sector projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.

 

The operation is expected to contribute to the following U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17).

DUBAI – Durante a Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas de 2023 (COP28), o BID Invest e a Corporação Financeira para o Desenvolvimento Internacional (DFC) dos Estados Unidos anunciou que está investindo conjuntamente um total de US$ 23 milhões em capital na plataforma de micromobilidade Tembici, para apoiar a expansão dos serviços de compartilhamento de bicicletas na América Latina.

 

Espera-se que o projeto aumente o número de usuários ativos do Tembici na Argentina, Brasil, Chile e Colômbia de 300.000 em 2023 para mais de 1 milhão em 2029. Espera-se que o número de viagens triplique, para quase 600 milhões em 2029. Será reduzir significativamente as emissões anuais de CO2, equivalente à retirada de 15.000 automóveis de passageiros das estradas, aumentando o número de viagens de bicicleta nas cidades como alternativa aos automóveis. Tembici visa ajudar a proteger a saúde dos moradores e o meio ambiente.

 

A participação do BID Invest inclui US$ 5 milhões de recursos próprios e US$ 3 milhões de financiamento misto do Fundo Conjunto de Financiamento Climático Finlândia-ALC. O investimento da DFC foi de US$ 15 milhões.

 

A Tembici opera uma das maiores redes de partilha de bicicletas do mundo e oferece uma solução aos municípios e aos passageiros que enfrentam uma variedade de desafios de mobilidade, incluindo elevados congestionamentos, preços inacessíveis dos automóveis e falta de investimento em infra-estruturas de transporte.

O sistema DMRV é um componente estratégico para o processo de certificação de carbono que marcará um marco para a transparência e integridade dos créditos de carbono, utilizando tecnologias digitais para medir, relatar e verificar as reduções de emissões de gases verdes e automatizar as transações de créditos de carbono.

O investimento da DFC ajudará a promover a Parceria do G7 para Infraestrutura e Investimento Global (PGI), expandindo o transporte público sustentável e fortalecendo a infraestrutura no Brasil.
